                                        Certified Nursing Assistant Program

The Certified Nursing Assistant program is a three-credit, three-period class designed for students who are interested in the nursing field.

The Certified Nursing Assistant program is an intensive class consisting of classroom theory and lab, and practice of skills at clinical sites.  Students rotate through clinical settings which include caring for acutely ill patients, skilled and long term care residents, and Alzheimers patients.

Upon successful completion of this program, the student will be eligible to sit for the State of Maine CNA exam.  Students will be helped to find job placement in area health care facilities if so desired.

Certified nursing assistants (CNAs) work under the supervision of a registered professional nurse and provide assistance to patients with daily living tasks.  Working closely with patients, CNAs are responsible for basic care services such as bathing, grooming, and feeding patients, assisting nurses with patient procedures, and checking patient vital signs.  CNAs give patients important social and emotional support, and also provide vital information on patient conditions to nurses.

CNAs work in nursing homes, hospitals, mental health facilities, assisted living facilities, and private homes.  Job prospects for CNAs are expected to be excellent due to the increasing long-term care needs of an aging population.

Being a CNA can be a stepping stone to becoming a registered nurse.  This program can also help you to decide if nursing is the career for you.

Students applying for this program need to be 16 years old.
