DECA Students compete in National Competition in Anaheim, California

DECA Students travel to Anaheim, California - Oxford Hills DECA members joined 16, 000 other students and advisors from around the United States and Canada at the International Career Development Conference. Students competed in Marketing, Hospitality, Finance and Entrepreneurial categories against the top 160 DECA members internationally. This "experience of a lifetime" was funded through fundraising and donations.

Graphic Design student will represent Maine at the SkillsUSA National Championship in June

Graphic Design student, Carly Sauro, will represent the State of Maine in the SkillsUSA National Championship in June. The SkillsUSA Maine Championship is the state-level competition for high school and college students enrolled in trade, technical and skilled-service instructional programs. Carly and hundreds of other students from nearly four dozen career technical education programs competed in fields ranging from video production to culinary arts in Bangor last month. Her winning informational graphic design centered around a cluster of 16 Maine lighthouses. Sam Donatelli earned a silver medal in Technical Computer Applications and Connor Heaward was awarded the bronze medal in Collision Repair Technology.

A ticket auction will be held April 27 to raise funds for Carly Sauro's trip to Kansas City, MO, to represent Maine in the National SKillsUSA Advertising Design Competition in June.

Fashion X Runway Show

The Fashion Design students of OHTS are ready to showcase their designs in the 10th annual fashion runway show. The show will be held at 7:00 PM in the OHCHS Mark S. Eastman Auditorium. Admission is $4.00. Ages 12 and under/65 and older are free. Proceeds from this show help fund class projects and next year's fashion show. Refreshments will be served and donations will be accepted.

Lori Millett, the Fashion Design instructor, weighs in on this year's fashion runway show. "2013 marks our tenth year, so we are celebrating. The Fashion Design program has grown and evolved greatly since it began. The workroom is very busy. The students are completing their projects and coordinating their looks. The variety of fabrics and colors is fun. It reminds me of wrapping paper. Work is starting on the show set and students are getting excited. It's getting real for them. I think we will have a great show this year. I hope everyone will come and celebrate with us."

Advanced Communications Teacher and Student win an Emmy

Oxford Hills Technical School's Advanced Communications Teacher, Tim Ouillette, and recent graduate, Jesse Newcomb, won an Emmy at the Boston-New England Emmy Awards on June 2. They collaborated on a PSA called "My Life, My Choice". The awards took place at the Westin Copley Hotel in Boston. Initially, Ouillette was approached by other members of the New England Media Coalition (NEMC) about participating in the PSA project. NEMC decided to enter as a group with Jesse scoring the piece and Ouillette doing the graphics. They had seven days to come up with a PSA. Jesse wrote the music himself and turned it around in less than 12 hours impressing the members of NEMC. Jesse states that he is not sure what his major will be in college but he enjoys writing music in his free time and will continue to do so. Our congratulations go out to Jesse Newcomb and Tim Ouillette on a job well done!

Kelsey Freitas brings home the first Gold medal for Oxford Hills Technical School at National Competition.

Kansas City, Mo., June 27, 2012, --- Kelsey Freitas, a 2011 graduate from Oxford Hills Technical School, was awarded the Gold Medal in Screen Printing Technology at the annual National Leadership and Skills Conference and SkillsUSA Championships. The competition was held at H. Roe Bartle Hall, Municipal Auditorium and American Royal in Kansas City, Missouri, on June 25, 2012.

Kelsey was in the Graphic Arts Programs for three years and has been to Nationals once before this competing in the Secondary Division in Screen Printing Technology. Kelsey is currently starting her sophomore year going to school at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth working on a dual bachelors degree in Graphic Design and Illustration and plans to pursue her education by getting her Masters Degree.

"I couldn't have done this without the long hours of practicing and studying like I have been doing before the first state competition that I attended in 2011. The mutual commitment between me and Mr. Cormier is one thing that stands out in my mind for the reason of my achievements even though he couldn't attend the National Conference with me this year like he did last. Two state gold medals and a National gold medal and two skill points later is something to be proud of. He's been my teacher for the past four years now and is currently my boss. I am fortunate to have had a great teacher like him who still continues to teach me when I'm no longer his student. I really can't thank him enough. I also need to thank my parents for always being there for me and believing in me and pushing me to go for the gold. I am also thankful for the generous donation made two years in a row from The Speedway Inc. I couldn't have made it there without their help either.
